Small Business Saturday Reflections

Hi there! I’m so glad you’ve made it to my very first blog post on lajoycethevoice.com. Its Small Business Saturday and I’m in the mood to share my story!

Here’s the tea.… Back in 2014 I had no idea that a late night hobby would turn into an entire legion of boss women wearing my divinely inspired designs.

My very first “Upstager” was constructed at a time when I was hopeless and broke! Accepting a costume party invite at the last minute, with nothing to wear, I used what I had at home to create my costume and 2 feathered brooches, two be worn one on each shoulder, was what I came up with. The look was a HIT and in my opinion, unlike anything I could’ve purchased in a department store or costume shop. I had no idea that sharing my picture on FB would manifest into almost 6 years of business, and over 900 Upstagers sold to date. Sororities and Civic Organizations,  Pastor’s Wives, Women of Faith, Business women, Political Figures, Government Officials, Public Speakers, Female Clergy, Funeral Home Attendants, Artists/Performers, HBCU Alumni Associations, and fabulous women all over have worn my Upstagers and we haven’t finished yet!

Since 2014 I’ve grown to realize that my distinct purpose in life is to help women and girls feel more beautiful by any means necessary. Pierre Balmain, creative director and founder of international couture fashion house exclaims that “Good fashion is evolution, not revolution.” I couldn’t agree more. Fashion, like words, is a language that tells a never-ending story and connects us culturally. I couldn’t be more proud to say that I have styled and been styled by so many amazing individuals, and I’m grateful to be apart of the evolution of so many lives.
